Read/Write DXT1 format?

Does anyone know of any examples of getting and setting a texture's content when the texture is using the dxt1 compression format?

I had a change that never got checked in that wrote the textures using dxt1 ... this greatly improved pipeline memory consumption, and disk usage. However, when I tried to set the texture's data in the streaming video class, it would throw an exception saying that the size of the data I was trying to set was not correct.
